Choking... can cause death!!!

*If you are lazy enough to read or get know these information, then you should eat slowly and gently to prevent choking, haha*

Nice Food? Eat Mouthful?? Please beware!!!

Because, Choking can cause death!!!

Choking occurs when a foreign object becomes lodged in the throat or windpipe, blocking the flow of air. In adults, a piece of food often is the culprit. Young children often swallow small objects. Because choking cuts off oxygen to the brain, administer first aid as quickly as possible.

The universal sign for choking is hands clutched to the throat.(as in the 2nd picture shown above) If the person doesn't give the signal, look for these indications:

* Inability to talk
* Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
* Inability to cough forcefully
* Skin, lips and nails turning blue or dusky
* Loss of consciousness

So, how you help out when someone around you is choking?
Give him a punch on his stomach? thump on his back?? or just pretend nothing happen as chocking is not a serious problem???

Hmmm, the most important is learn it, and known it then you can solve it when you face it!!! Now, these are the steps that you should follow when someone is in choking...

First step
:
Stand behind the person. Wrap your arms around the waist. Tip the person forward slightly.

Second step:
Make a fist with one hand. Position it slightly above the person's navel.

Third step
:
Grasp the fist with the other hand. Press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust — as if trying to lift the person up.

Fourth step:
Perform a total of five abdominal thrusts, if needed. If the blockage still isn't dislodged, repeat the "five-and-five" cycle

If you are not very sure with the instruction, here attached with the choking video demonstration

If you are unfortunate enough, you're alone and choking, you'll be unable to effectively deliver back blows to yourself. However, you can still perform abdominal thrusts to dislodge the item.

To perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) on yourself:

First step:
Place a fist slightly above your navel.

Second step:
Grasp your fist with the other hand and bend over a hard surface — a countertop or chair will do.
Third step:
Shove your fist inward and upward.

If given with these information, you are still not sure on how to recover the chocking, then please join our first aid training next year!!! Thank you

have a nice sem break!

Basic Home First Aid

Due to busy for preparing final exams, First Aid Society Blog have been neglected..
Here we are back..

Have you all still wondering What is first aid about????

First Aid is the quick and correct help that is given when anyone gets sick or hurt.
Basic First Aid skills are to be used until medical help arrives

There are some basic first aid skill that you can do when u meet the situation....
"Your one moment, Lifetime for others"..quote from Blood Donation Campaign Jan 2009 's Motto

  • Should your friend, or a brother or sister, feel nauseous or complain of a belly pain, don't give that person anything to eat or drink. Put an ice pack on that area that hurts and call an adult. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • Run minor burns under cold water immediately after they happen. It will help take away the pain. If the burn covers a large area and blisters, call for help, if your clothes or someone else's cloths catch on fire, DON'T RUN, Stop, Drop, and Roll until the flames go out, call 9-1-1, ALWAYS STAY CALM!

Figure 1.0 Run minor burns under cold water

  • Wash out minor cuts with soap and water, than cover with a bandage. If you have a deep cut, cover it with a clean cloth. Press down on the cut and keep the pressure steady until the bleeding stops. If it doesn't stop, call 9-1-1 ALWAYS STAY CALM!.

Figure 1.1 cover with a bandage

Figure 1.2 How if you see people faint????
  • If someone faints, put a pillow under his/her legs to elevate them. Tilt head to the side, than put cold compresses on the forehead and call 9-1-1. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean forward to keep the blood from going down your throat. Take a handkerchief or a clean cloth and place it over the bridge of your nose. Squeeze firmly on both sides of the soft portion of your nose for 10 minutes. Keep the pressure steady. If the bleeding doesn't stop, call 9-1-1. ALWAYS STAY CALM!
  • Figure 1.3 Way to do for nosebleed

  • If someone is gasping for breath, try to calm them, and ask them if they are alright. If they are choking, and can't answer you, perform the Heimlich Maneuver.
1.Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around his/her waist with one hand made into a fist.
    2. The thumb of your fisted hand should rest against the victim's abdomen well above the navel and just below the breastbone.
    3. Grasp that fist with your other hand and press with one upward thrust. Repeat thrust if necessary. Have someone call for help. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If someone is hit on the head and is unconscious, call 9-1-1. NEVER MOVE THE HEAD OR NECK, stay CALM, and wait for emergency help to arrive, do not leave the person alone. And don't allow someone to move them until help arrives, ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If you, or a brother or sister swallow something poisonous, call the local Posion Control Center immediately, and 9-1-1. Have as much information as you can about what was taken, how much, when, etc.Do Not eat or drink anything, wait until help arrives. ALWAYS STAY CALM!.

  • If an insect stings you and the stinger remains, never squeeze it out. Scrape it off with your fingernail. After the stinger is removed, wash the area with soap and water. Than apply an ice pack or cold cloth. If you start having trouble breathing, or if you know you are allergic to that insect, call 9-1-1. STAY CALM!

  • If you or a friend should fracture a limb, don't move that limb. Ask someone to call 9-1-1. Don't give the injured person anything to eat or drink. If the injured limb is deformed or badly swollen, it usually means there is a fracture. STAY CALM!

  • If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it with water and place it in a container of milk or water. See a dentist immediately.

CPR techniques

yeah, here i share some 1st aid skills with u all. Hope u will enjoy it~

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is an important link in the chain of survival for a victim of sudden cardiac or respiratory arrest. CPR involves a combination of mount-to-mouth rescue breathing (or other artificial ventilation techniques) and chest compressions. It keeps some oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until appropriate medical treatment can restore normal heart action.

Cardiac arrest causes the victim to lose consciousness within seconds. If there is early access to the EMS system (Phone First! Phone Fast!), early CPR, early defibrillation, and early advanced care, the person has a chance to survive.

CPR techniques include 3 basic rescue skills, the ABCs of CPR; Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.

Open an Airway

Tilt the head back and move the lower jaw (chin) forward

A key action for successful resuscitation is immediate opening of the airway by positioning the head properly. It is important to remember that the back of the tongue and the epiglottis are the most common causes of airway obstruction in the unconscious victim. Since the tongue, directly, and the epiglottis, indirectly, are attached to the lower jaw, tilting the head back and moving the lower jaw (chin) forward lifts the tongue and the epiglottis from the back of the throat and usually opens the airway.

Breathing

When breathing stops, the body has only the oxygen remaining in the lungs and bloodstream. Therefore, when breathing stops, cardiac arrest and death quickly follow. Mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing is the quickest way to get oxygen into the victims lungs. There is more than enough oxygen in the air you breath into the victim to supply the victims needs. Rescue breathing, using a mouth-barrier device, should be performed until the victim can breathe on his or her own or until trained professionals take over.
If the victim is unconscious and breathing and there is no evidence of trauma, you should place the victim on his or her side in the recovery position.
If the victim's heart is beating, you should (1) maintain an open airway and (2) breath for the victim.
If the victim's heart is not beating, you should perform rescue breathing plus chest compressions.

Circulation

Chest compressions can maintain some blood flow to the lungs, brain, coronary arteries, and other major organs. When chest compressions are performed, rescue breathing should also be performed.

When to use CPR? (yeah, in the movie u can see the actors always use CPR, but in fact, CPR cannot be used simply and might be cause negative effect if it's used wrongly)

CPR is most successful when administered as quickly as possible, but you must first determine if it's necessary. It should only be performed when a person isn't breathing or circulating blood adequately.

First, determine that it's safe to approach the person in trouble. For instance, if someone was injured in an accident on a busy highway, you'd have to be extremely careful about ongoing traffic as you try to help. Or if someone touched an exposed wire and was electrocuted, you'd have to be certain that he or she is no longer in contact with electricity before offering assistance, to prevent becoming electrocuted yourself. (For instance, turn off the source of electricity, such as a light switch or a circuit breaker.)

Once you know that you can safely approach someone who needs help, quickly evaluate whether the person is responsive. Look for things like eye opening, sounds from the mouth, or other signs of life like movement of the arms and legs. In infants and younger children, rubbing the chest (over the breastbone) can help determine if there is any level of responsiveness. In older children and adults, this can also be done by gently shaking the shoulders and asking if they're all right.

The next step is to check if the victim is breathing. You can determine this by watching the person's chest for the rise and fall of breaths and listening for the sound of air going in and out of the lungs. In a CPR or basic life support (BLS) course, participants practice techniques for determining if breathing or circulation is adequate. If you can't determine whether someone is breathing, you should begin CPR and continue until help arrives.

Whenever CPR is needed, remember to call for emergency medical assistance. Current CPR courses teach you that if you are alone with an unresponsive infant or child, give chest compressions for 5 cycles (about 2 minutes) before calling for help.

1st Meeting With SRC

10/7/08 is the day for the first meeting with SRC. There are few activities which are suggested by the SRC.
1. Art and Science Week ( Week 2)
- This event is mainly for all society related to art and science. As for us , we can ignore it. This event will be done at the same week with recruitment drive. It is like : 1 society can have a day in the week to have a event. The main propose for this event is to promote your society and make UTAR more " alive ".
2. FEStival ( Week 6 )
- Same as the FEStival for this year. The organizing chairman now will be Hooi Yee. Progress report will be updated later.
3. Environmental Week
- This event is basically more to promote recycling. Our society can totally ignore this event cuz i can't think of how our soceity's name can relate to this event.
4. SRC blogspot
- SRC is planning to have a blogspot which are link from UTAR main website. In their website, they will include society current event and the link to our blogspot. The main propose for this event is for others to know our event easier.
5. SRC newsletter
- This is more like a newspaper with all the current society event but it onli release once in 3 months which i think is quite useless.( just for personal opinion , no harm )
6. Valentine days
- In this event , we can choose
1. under SRC
2. individual
3. collaborate with other society
If under SRC , they are planning to have a valentine NIGHT. It is just like a prom night.

The proposal for the first 2 events ( Art and Science Week and FEStival ) must hand to the SRC on week 14. So, organizing commitee for the event , be fast.

Please think and give your idea(S) on those activities in the next meeting.
Thank you.
