Choking... can cause death!!!

*If you are lazy enough to read or get know these information, then you should eat slowly and gently to prevent choking, haha*

Nice Food? Eat Mouthful?? Please beware!!!

Because, Choking can cause death!!!

Choking occurs when a foreign object becomes lodged in the throat or windpipe, blocking the flow of air. In adults, a piece of food often is the culprit. Young children often swallow small objects. Because choking cuts off oxygen to the brain, administer first aid as quickly as possible.

The universal sign for choking is hands clutched to the throat.(as in the 2nd picture shown above) If the person doesn't give the signal, look for these indications:

* Inability to talk
* Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
* Inability to cough forcefully
* Skin, lips and nails turning blue or dusky
* Loss of consciousness

So, how you help out when someone around you is choking?
Give him a punch on his stomach? thump on his back?? or just pretend nothing happen as chocking is not a serious problem???

Hmmm, the most important is learn it, and known it then you can solve it when you face it!!! Now, these are the steps that you should follow when someone is in choking...

First step
:
Stand behind the person. Wrap your arms around the waist. Tip the person forward slightly.

Second step:
Make a fist with one hand. Position it slightly above the person's navel.

Third step
:
Grasp the fist with the other hand. Press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust — as if trying to lift the person up.

Fourth step:
Perform a total of five abdominal thrusts, if needed. If the blockage still isn't dislodged, repeat the "five-and-five" cycle

If you are not very sure with the instruction, here attached with the choking video demonstration

If you are unfortunate enough, you're alone and choking, you'll be unable to effectively deliver back blows to yourself. However, you can still perform abdominal thrusts to dislodge the item.

To perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) on yourself:

First step:
Place a fist slightly above your navel.

Second step:
Grasp your fist with the other hand and bend over a hard surface — a countertop or chair will do.
Third step:
Shove your fist inward and upward.

If given with these information, you are still not sure on how to recover the chocking, then please join our first aid training next year!!! Thank you

have a nice sem break!

Basic Home First Aid

Due to busy for preparing final exams, First Aid Society Blog have been neglected..
Here we are back..

Have you all still wondering What is first aid about????

First Aid is the quick and correct help that is given when anyone gets sick or hurt.
Basic First Aid skills are to be used until medical help arrives

There are some basic first aid skill that you can do when u meet the situation....
"Your one moment, Lifetime for others"..quote from Blood Donation Campaign Jan 2009 's Motto

  • Should your friend, or a brother or sister, feel nauseous or complain of a belly pain, don't give that person anything to eat or drink. Put an ice pack on that area that hurts and call an adult. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • Run minor burns under cold water immediately after they happen. It will help take away the pain. If the burn covers a large area and blisters, call for help, if your clothes or someone else's cloths catch on fire, DON'T RUN, Stop, Drop, and Roll until the flames go out, call 9-1-1, ALWAYS STAY CALM!

Figure 1.0 Run minor burns under cold water

  • Wash out minor cuts with soap and water, than cover with a bandage. If you have a deep cut, cover it with a clean cloth. Press down on the cut and keep the pressure steady until the bleeding stops. If it doesn't stop, call 9-1-1 ALWAYS STAY CALM!.

Figure 1.2 How if you see people faint????
  • If someone faints, put a pillow under his/her legs to elevate them. Tilt head to the side, than put cold compresses on the forehead and call 9-1-1. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean forward to keep the blood from going down your throat. Take a handkerchief or a clean cloth and place it over the bridge of your nose. Squeeze firmly on both sides of the soft portion of your nose for 10 minutes. Keep the pressure steady. If the bleeding doesn't stop, call 9-1-1. ALWAYS STAY CALM!
  • Figure 1.3 Way to do for nosebleed

  • If someone is gasping for breath, try to calm them, and ask them if they are alright. If they are choking, and can't answer you, perform the Heimlich Maneuver.
1.Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around his/her waist with one hand made into a fist.
    2. The thumb of your fisted hand should rest against the victim's abdomen well above the navel and just below the breastbone.
    3. Grasp that fist with your other hand and press with one upward thrust. Repeat thrust if necessary. Have someone call for help. ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If someone is hit on the head and is unconscious, call 9-1-1. NEVER MOVE THE HEAD OR NECK, stay CALM, and wait for emergency help to arrive, do not leave the person alone. And don't allow someone to move them until help arrives, ALWAYS STAY CALM!

  • If you, or a brother or sister swallow something poisonous, call the local Posion Control Center immediately, and 9-1-1. Have as much information as you can about what was taken, how much, when, etc.Do Not eat or drink anything, wait until help arrives. ALWAYS STAY CALM!.

  • If an insect stings you and the stinger remains, never squeeze it out. Scrape it off with your fingernail. After the stinger is removed, wash the area with soap and water. Than apply an ice pack or cold cloth. If you start having trouble breathing, or if you know you are allergic to that insect, call 9-1-1. STAY CALM!

  • If you or a friend should fracture a limb, don't move that limb. Ask someone to call 9-1-1. Don't give the injured person anything to eat or drink. If the injured limb is deformed or badly swollen, it usually means there is a fracture. STAY CALM!

  • If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it with water and place it in a container of milk or water. See a dentist immediately.
  • Figure 1.4 Save a knocked out tooth
